REPRESENTATIVE DEWEESE SECURES FUNDING TO CONTINUE PITTSBURGH VOYAGER 'COMMUNITY RIVER VENTURES' IN 50th LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT$100,000 Department of Education Grant to be Presented at March 31 Program for High School Superintendents, Principals, Teachers PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh Voyager, the acclaimed not-for-profit river-based environmental education organization that operates a fleet of classroom vessels on the region's rivers, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to expand Voyager's mobile Community River Ventures program. A formal presentation of the grant will be made by State Representative H. William DeWeese (D), who represents the 50th District, at a March 31 informational program for school superintendents, principals, and teachers in attendance. "I am delighted that we were able to secure this funding for Voyager," said Rep. DeWeese. "This excellent mobile river environmental science program directly supports state education standards, and it is available to multiple school districts in a convenient location at Rice's Landing here in Greene County." There are eight school districts spanning three counties in Rep. DeWeese’s legislative district. This program and its community-based river locations enable teachers and students to participate in Voyager’s Community River Ventures. Representatives from all eight districts: Albert Gallatin Area and Brownsville Area (Fayette County); Bethlehem-Center (Washington); and Carmichaels Area, Central Greene, Jefferson-Morgan, Southeastern Greene, and West Greene (Greene County), were invited to attend the March 31 program, which will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 31 in the Greene County Career and Technology Center. "We are very appreciative of Representative DeWeese's efforts to secure this important funding," said Voyager Executive Director Karl A. Thomas. "Mr. DeWeese has been a long-time champion of Voyager and its Community River Ventures Program. We look forward to working with all eight districts this coming fall and to the opportunity of providing public programming during our stay in the community." The luncheon program will feature an overview of the Community River Ventures program and how districts can register their middle- and high school students. Members of the Voyager education department, including Director Jeff Jordan, as well as Director of Program Development, Patrick Bradley, will be on-hand to answer questions. Community River Ventures is a hands-on experiential environmental science program.
