RiverFest Student Awards - 2013

2013 HONOREES:

RiverQuest Student Awards will be presented at the Fox Chapel Yacht Club on July 13, 2013, during RiverQuest's "RiverFest" fundraiser and special event. Awardees are students who demonstrate interest in environmental science and stewardship and meet additional criteria, in three different grade levels.

 

Elementary School: Light of the Mon Award

Winners receive a commemorative plaque, $25 award, RiverQuest t-shirt, and a RiverQuest Family Saturday sail certificate. This award is presented to a student in grades 3, 4 or 5 who

  • demonstrates environmental stewardship through projects attitudes, and/or actions in the community
  • demonstrates academic excellence OR academic progress in science

Middle School: Allegheny Ally Award

Winners receive a commemorative plaque, $50 award, RiverQuest t-shirt, and a RiverQuest Family Saturday sail certificate.  This award is presented to a student in grades 6, 7 or 8 who

  • demonstrates environmental stewardship through studies, projects and/or actions in the community
  • demonstrates interest in physical and life sciences through participation in extra-curricular or project based science activities
  • demonstrates academic excellence OR academic progress in science

High School: Ohio River Navigator Award

Winners receive a commemorative plaque, $100 award, RiverQuest t-shirt, and a RiverQuest Family Saturday sail certificate.This award is presented to a student in grade 9,10, 11 or 12 who

  • demonstrates academic interest and pursues coursework in environmental science, ecology and related areas
  • demonstrates environmental stewardship through studies, projects and/or actions in the community
  • demonstrates academic excellence OR academic progress in science
  • demonstrates interest in pursuing a field of study in or related to the sciences

To nominate a student, teachers must do the following:

1. Complete a nomination form (one form per student) and submit to RiverQuest. Student parental/guardian permission and contact information, and school principal signature is required in order to nominate a student. Selection of award recipients will be completed by staff and board of Pittsburgh Voyager, Inc. dba RiverQuest, based solely on teacher-provided information. One or more winners may be selected in each category. Awardees and two parents or guardians will be invited to attend the July 13, 2013 event in order to receive their award.

 

2. Include a narrative (written by the nominating teacher, limit 1 page) that describes why the nomination is being made.  Nominations may also include COPIES of the following types of supporting materials: samples of student writing, photographs of project work, or other student-produced materials that support the nomination. (Do not send originals as these will not be returned.)

 

All students not selected to receive an award will receive a letter and Certificate of Merit, and a Family Pass to a RiverQuest Saturday Family Sail.
